sometimes.

Sometimes,

you’ve been listening to indie tunes, the tunes that have literacy all over them, songs with meaning and wisdom - and they’re good too.

Things that fall under the umbrella of indie folk or rock when it was real. Stuff like Lana Del Rey’s 'Video Games' (still peeved that no one has had this song cut/edited to actual video game footage), Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The River’ or Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

Sometimes,

a whisper in the back of the head, and partially you as well, wants catchy pop music.

Dance like weirdos. Dance like weirdos often live on Eurovision.
And don’t let anyone tell you off for liking it. It's awesome.

Sometimes,

You just want to listen and dance to Izabo’s ‘Time’ (Israel’s entry), because you can, and its such a fun, contagious song, that I suspect is probably okay if you do.

You want the Buranovo grannies to win, because they’re the Buranovo grannies and they baked you pastries - and you dance again to the tune of 'Party for Everybody' (Russia’s entry).

My first memory of Eurovision was sleeping on a mattress laid in the living room watching Frenchmen in pink run around the stage - and then the next was Finnish heavy metal enthusiasts donned in the costumes as if they were rejects from the Lord of the Rings film sets. Tonnes. Of. Fun.

When you listen to a catchy pop-song, you no longer need to maintain that artistic, bohemian image (sometimes pretentious, never deny that), and just let yourself go ballistic.

And dance like a weirdo.

And everyone’s eyeing you with weird looks on the train.
But you don’t care.

Imagine your dress and hair like you came from that tiny gap between the 50s and the 60s - that’s your world for the moment.

Sometimes,

This is why you want a good pop song- that you don’t tell anyone except your fellow Eurovision afficionados. It’s your precious little pleasure.

But, please don’t you ever crank up the Montenegrin entry…

“Euro Skeptic…” the speaker blasts in a very thick Eastern European accent.
